Pre Symposium Workshops:

Design Standard Practice
Sunday, May 27, 2012
(1 h – 5 h pm.)
Fee 650 SEK /Workshop and coffee break
Registration to this workshop should be made through the Symposium Registration Form.

Chair: Wulf Schubert, Graz University, Austria & Håkan Stille, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

Objective: To discuss the experiences of verification of rock mechanical design by calculations, adaption of prescript measures and observation methods according to the new Eurocode for future development and implementation.

Background: The New Eurocode for Geotechnical design EN 1997-1 was introduced in Europe during 2010 for all types of civil engineering work. In many countries rock slopes, rock tunnels and rock caverns have been assessed to belong to this category. In other countries it has been argued that these types of rock mechanical problem have to fall outside the scope of the code.
In order to make the transit to the new code as smooth as possible every nation in Europe have had the possibility to write a national amendment to the code. The code has been used for up to a year at the time of the symposium and experiences have been gained of the implementation and the application for different rock mechanic design issues.
However, the main input to the new code has come from the field of structural engineering. The design issues in geotechnical engineering are in many aspects quite different from the field of structural engineering. It is, therefore, important that our subject, rock mechanics, will be well represented in the future work of development of the code. The workshop should be a start of our future work to improve and adapt the code to our Rock Mechanic issues.

Program:

  • 13.00-13-15 The Eurocode 1997-1, an introduction connected to the field of Rock Mechanics.
  • 13.15-14.00 Partial factors, the applicability of the method
  • 14.00-14.45 Prescript measures, standards to be used in many cases
  • 14.45-15-15 Coffee break
  • 15.15-16.00 The Observational Method, complex geotechnical behavior and the applicability of the method
  • 16.00-16.45 Reliability methods, an alternative to be used
  • 16.45-17.00 Conclusion

Every issue in the workshop will start with a short key note lecture followed by short contributions and an open discussion. All delegates are invited to actively take part in the workshop.

Rock Mechanics in Deep Underground Excavations in hard rock
Sunday, May 27, 2012
(1 h – 5.30 h pm.)
Fee 650 SEK /Workshop and coffee break
Registration to this workshop should be made through the Symposium Registration Form.

Chair: Rolf Christiansson, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management (SKB)
Panel members: Giovanni Barla, Politecnico di Torino, Italy
Mats Holmberg, Tunnel Engineering, Sweden
Derek Martin, University of Alberta, Canada

The objective of the workshop is to expose the audience to the design strategy used in modern day tunneling for deep tunnels in hard rocks. The design strategy given by the presenters will be discussed by a panel of experts. The panel will also address questions from the audience.

A deep tunnel will be excavated by drill and blast.  The owners of the tunnel project would like to know what information should be collected and what should be the strategy for the Final Design. A case study will be given to the presenters and they will use this as the example in their presentations as they address each of the topics below for the proposed 8m diameter deep tunnel in Scandinavian Shield.

Program:

  • 13:00-13:40 Characterization strategy – Mark Diederichs, Queen’s University, Canada
  • 13:40-14:20 Empirical design approach – John Hadjigeorgiou, University of Toronto, Canada
  • 14:20-15:00 Numerical design approach – Branko Damjanac, Itasca
  • 15:00-15:30 Coffee
  • 15:30-16:10 Support strategy – Charlie Li, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
  • 16:10-16:50 Grouting strategy – Åsa Fransson, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • 16:50-17:30 Owner’s Review Panel discussion
